Lamppost Ministries - Community #1

These opening chapters set the stage for everything else in the book. We meet Mitchell, his close-knit neighborhood, and his fear of losing that comfort when a new family moves in. Through a humorous and slightly suspicious lens, he watches his new neighbors arrive, certain they might just be part of the mafia. But what begins with wariness quickly turns into one of the most meaningful friendships of his life. The Stampers don’t just become neighbors, they become family, unknowingly teaching Mitchell firsthand what biblical community looks like: love, hospitality, generosity, and joy.

From this personal story, the book immediately pulls back to the bigger picture, that community isn’t just a good idea or a happy accident, it is rooted in the very nature of God. Genesis 1:26 shows us God referring to Himself as “Us” and “Our”, revealing the triune God who has eternally existed in perfect relationship as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This means we were made in the image of a relational God. Community isn’t an optional add-on to faith; it’s part of our design. Even Adam, walking in perfect communion with God in Eden, needed human connection (Genesis 2:18). Jesus models this truth throughout His life, calling disciples to walk with Him, eating with them, praying with them, and sending them out in pairs. These first two chapters remind us that God Himself is the blueprint for community and that when we live connected lives, we reflect His very heart.

Our Founder

Mitchell Hollis isn’t a pastor, theologian, philosopher, or world-renowned author. He’s a down-to-earth guy who loves finding the connections between everyday life and our walk with Christ. He and his wife, Holly, make their home in Dalton, Georgia, with their two sons, Lane and Landon, and their daughter-in-law, Christian.

In 2010, Mitchell and Holly founded Run for God Ministries, a movement that has reached hundreds of thousands of people in thousands of communities worldwide. In 2023, Run for God joined forces with Upward Sports, continuing to change lives everywhere with a simple, powerful message: God loves you.
